Bike Check: Joan’s Makino

It’s time for another bike check, and it looks like we’ve been on an NJS streak lately! But this one isn’t from Japan… It’s from Brooklyn. While visiting Tuned in New York, I took the opportunity to snap a few shots of Joan’s Makino. A beautiful blend between Japan and the United States, like we love to see.

Joan actually bought that frame from Japan through our good friends at NJS Export, imported it to the U.S. to build it, and then; Traveled back to Japan to ride his Makino in Tokyo! And you can really feel the American-Japanese mix happening here: the original fork was swapped for a Wound Up, the seatpost is a titanium American Classic, yet the drivetrain remains purely Japanese.

Detailed Parts List

Frameset
Makino with Wound Up fork

Chainring and Cog
Sugino Zen 49T, Sugino Gifas 17T

Crank Sugino 75

Seatpost and Saddle
American classic Ti Seatpost, Sworks saddle

Stem and Handlebar
Nitto B105AA, Nitto Pearl 9 Stem

Wheels Honney Wheel rims laced to Suzue Pro Max

As one of the mechanics over at Tuned in Brooklyn, it’s no surprise that the wheels are Honey carbon hoops, yet they’re still laced to Japanese Suzue ProMax hubs.
That same American-Japanese blend carries through to the cockpit, with a Nitto handlebar and stem paired with a Chris King headset.

Final details include the now ridiculously overpriced Kashimax Five Gold frame protector and matching Kashimax straps, perfect finishing touches to the build.

Overall, it’s another bike built around an NJS frame that goes beyond the purist approach, and you know how much I’ve been into that lately. Love seeing builds like this and can’t wait to capture more!

What can I say? It’s perfect!
