Bike Check: Teddy’s Custom Weis ISP

Here it is! Another album shot by Kang on his trip to New York last year. And as much as I love to stare at the scans he sent me, I kinda wish I was there in person to see the real thing. Fast bikes look even faster with someone on it, but pictures will have to do for this time.
Today we’re looking at Teddy’s Weis ISP and how one man’s vision of a dream bike took only two months to become reality.

Like I just said, I didn't get the chance to meet Teddy and his bike, but we had quite a long phone call to talk about the creative process that happened in the background. The main piece here being of course this custom built Weis track ISP, which Teddy ordered after some serious thinking and a bit of hesitation.

“I knew it was time for a dream build!  But some builders had close to fifteen months of waiting time, and I wasn’t down to wait a year and half to possibly change my mind halfway in between.  Even if I had that precise Idea of what I wanted, you never know what could happen and spiral you into a totally different project. But after narrowing my choice to Weis or Low, I went for something New York based, as I always considered it the mecca of track bikes. Having something from this area was probably the most meaningful for me, and these asymmetric seat stays are just the icing on the cake”

So after a call with the masterminds at Weis and explaining what he wanted, Teddy only had to wait two months to receive his frame on his doorstep. In the meantime,  parts for this project were being sourced, it was only a matter of putting everything together.

To be perfectly honest, green frames are not that common, and I usually find them hard to build correctly. That’s my strictly personal point of view, but when Teddy told me he had this vision of a Racing Green Aston Martin with bronze wheels, I was already more onboard. So after choosing the color, Cole (Weis’s owner) and him settle on the acid green splatter to give it that extra sparkle of spice and give this frame the “pop” it deserves.

But even if the frame alone is impressive, let’s take a look at the complete build and how Teddy went really deep down the “Details are everything” rabbit hole.

First off is the cockpit with these very narrow Enve aero drop bars which are only 40 cm down the drops but even more slim at 36 cm up top. Yes, literally tighter than some Keirin bars. Clamped to that is a custom-made Firefly titanium stem that Teddy also ordered for this build. 

Little favorite detail here: the SlamThatStem bearing cover for maximum aero positioning. You gotta love that stuff.

Enve wheels were the logical choice for someone that comes from mountain biking and has always seen the American brand at the top of their game. These sweet 5.6 are laced to a pair of PAUL hubs, and you can truly start to see the patriotic effort there.

Finally, I want to talk about what probably surprised me the most in this build. When you’re running Sugino 75, you’re already in the top tier crank territory. If you’re really a baller, you go for Grand Mighty, but I’ve never seen anyone running Super 75s on the street.
And Teddy had a way too easy answer for his pick: “the more Nickel tone of the “Super” was a better fit with the titanium stem, and paired well with that  53T Bespoke chainring” Out of all the reasons to choose that crank-set, that’s probably the best one I’ve heard so far.

This is truly “Clean dream build material”. Rare Parts on a custom-made frame, aiming for performance, by maintaining good looks and a celebration to frame builders and custom parts makers.

But it’s also Teddy’s training bike, with everything he needs to go fast. 51x15 ratio, tubular tires, clipless pedals, and some serious carbon bits.

It’s an end goal build, but it’s also eating miles on the weekend, and that’s how it should work!
