Shanghai color film 400 in… Well… Shanghai

We’re back with another film review! And as much as I enjoy surprises, the film lottery has been oddly specific lately… I’ve only ended up with rolls I wouldn’t normally pick for myself. This roll of Shanghai 400 Color Film was also a gift, and since I recently traveled to China for some reportage, it felt like the perfect opportunity to shoot a film quite literally named Shanghai.

Call me basic, but when I see a film with bright red packaging, I kind of expect bright, contrasty colors. Well… I couldn’t have been more wrong. Shanghai 400 is one of the most desaturated color films I’ve had the chance to shoot. Which is a bit of a shame, really, since I recently discovered how vibrant the cycling scene is here in Shanghai.

As it often goes, I looked at my scans one night, didn’t like them, and closed that folder for a week or two. Then I came back for a second look and, sometimes, like this time, I found myself thinking: “You know what? There might be something here.” I’d bet this film could be really interesting in more monochrome environments or on those gray winter days.

As always, I shot this film with zero prior research. And aside from the washed-out colors, there’s quite a bit of grain for a 400 ISO film. Still, for some obscure reason, doing these film experiments has been one of the most enjoyable parts of Slow Spin Society so far.

My opinion: You can try it… but the real question is: should you?

If you’re looking to make your rainy photos feel even sadder, this might be the perfect match. But if you’re chasing golden summer memories, I’d reach for something else.

Any recommendations for the next one?
