Mash Steel

Build 22/30

Material and Manufacturing quality 6/10
Paint and Finish 9/10
Weight 7/10

To fully comprehend this, you likely need to read my rating on the Mash Work. However, I'll keep it concise. After their ten-year partnership, Mash and Cinelli chose to part ways. Cinelli established the Tutto, while Mash introduced the Steel. The tubing haven’t really changed even if it isn’t branded Columbus — the fork crown and rear bridge feature a "Mash" indent, an appealing detail. The canti-brake studs differ slightly, but otherwise, it's similar in design to the Mash Work.

This is where the Steel really shines: Mash releases new colorways approximately every two years, rarely missing the mark. Special mentions to the Mash Lava and Raw phosphate. Some frames have the Mash logo as a sticker, over the clear coat, and for that it’s not a 10/10

Like the Mash Work, it's quite a heavy frame, weighing in at around 2.9 kg. However, with the tubes being so springy, the weight has never really been an issue for me. Note: Installing a carbon fork will significantly lighten and stiffen the front of your bike.

Ride 24/30

Geometry and sizing 7/10
Versatility 10/10
Handling and comfort 7/10

Compare to the Masher Work, the geometry is slightly more slack and relaxed. If you primarily ride in the city, you might view this as a disadvantage. However, for long adventure and tracklocross riding, it’s typically a good trait.

I fitted tires up to 42c in this frame, but with a bit of rubbing in the rear. Additionally, you get two bottle cage mounts, and, similar to the Mash Work, removable canti-brake studs. There is no v-brake mount at the rear; however, there is a hole in the fork if you need to install a rack.

Like its big brother, the Mash Work, it's not the stiffest bike on the market but remains a fantastic one with impressive versatility. The more relaxed geometry (still comparing to the Mash Work), provides better comfort over longer distances.

Value 20/30

Price 5/10
Availability 8/10
Used Market 7/10

Usually, around $875, you indeed pay extra for the hype and the colorful paint job. However, you're also supporting a small brand and its local community.

There is always a bit of stock on the Mash website, and used ones occasionally appear on the used market. But remember that people tend to keep these bikes since they are so versatile.

SSS Factor 8/10

I had two of them for years, and it was truly heartbreaking to let them go. It’s a bike that can be a simple commuting tool, but if you have the will, it'll take you as far as you want to go.
